A hiring decision, one rung at a time

Someone is deciding between two final candidates for a role they need to fill this month. Candidate A has slightly less direct experience but asks sharper questions in the interview. Candidate B has the stronger résumé.

The first criterion is straightforward: relevant experience. B wins.

Then a second criterion appears: communication style. A wins.

Then a third: culture fit, which turns out to be hard to define, so a fourth criterion gets added to clarify it: prior experience at a similarly sized company. Then a fifth, about long-term trajectory. By the time nine criteria are on the list, no candidate satisfies all of them, and the decision has quietly become a search for a reason to keep looking rather than a search for the better of two real options.

This is the Sin Metal pattern in its clearest form — precision that never stops adding rungs to the ladder, long after the ladder should have reached the ground.

Where refinement is a real strength

The same instinct (noticing the small inconsistency, being able to say exactly what "good" means for a given piece of work) is what makes Sin Metal imagery fit quality control, editing, diagnosis and design. The difference between that and the hiring scenario above is whether the standard is written down somewhere another competent person could apply it, or whether it lives only in one person's judgment and shifts slightly every time it's invoked.

Sorting criteria before the next decision

Before the list of standards grows again, sort whatever is already on it into four categories:

• non-negotiable
• important
• preferable
• cosmetic

Then look specifically at the first category. A decision with two non-negotiables can actually be made. A decision with nine is usually a decision being protected from having to happen.

What this looks like in relationships

The identical ladder can build in a relationship: one small disappointment becomes evidence for a rule, the rule generates an exception, the exception becomes a new standard, and eventually the other person is being measured against a list they've never seen. In a workable version of this pattern, appreciation gets stated with the same precision as criticism — not as compensation, but because both are genuinely observed.
