Power Stars (관성) in Saju: Structure, Pressure and Role
One of the two Power Stars is called the Officer and the other is called Seven Killings, and the second name has outlived every attempt to soften it. Both describe pressure on the Day Master, from different directions.
The Power Stars (관성, 官星, gwanseong) are the element that controls the Day Master (일간, 日干, ilgan). Two labels divide the family by polarity: Direct Officer (정관, 正官, Jeonggwan) when the controlling stem has the opposite yin-yang polarity to the Day Master, and Indirect Power (편관, 偏官, Pyeongwan) when it has the same polarity. The second is far better known by its older name, Seven Killings (칠살, 七殺, Chilsal). Both name pressure. The difference is whether the pressure comes with a rulebook.
Why one name is an official and the other is a killing
The Officer name is easy. 官 is the character for a government post, and the traditional image for Jeonggwan is exactly that: the magistrate, the examination, the rank that carries duties. Pressure that arrives with a title and a procedure.
Seven Killings needs the arithmetic. Start at any stem in the ten-stem sequence, count it as one, and the seventh stem is the one that controls it with the same polarity. From Gap 甲 the seventh is Gyeong 庚, Yang Metal against Yang Wood. From Gyeong the seventh is Byeong 丙, Yang Fire against Yang Metal. The "seven" is a position, and the "killing" is the tradition's word for a same-polarity attack with nothing mediating it. Same polarity means no complementary pull and nothing to soften the contact. Translators kept the phrase because the alternatives, Indirect Officer or Indirect Power, describe the polarity and lose the point: this pressure has no office behind it.

For the yin Day Masters the element is unchanged and the stems trade places. Eul 乙 Yin Wood takes Gyeong 庚 as its Direct Officer and Sin 辛 as its Seven Killings.
Two textures of pressure
Jeonggwan is the pressure that organises. Rules you agreed to, an institution you belong to, a role with a job description, a reputation that has to be maintained because other people rely on it. It constrains the Day Master the way a riverbank constrains water: the water goes somewhere useful because it cannot go everywhere. Traditional readings associate a well-placed Jeonggwan with public standing, and a Jeonggwan the Day Master cannot meet with a role that never fit.
Pyeongwan is pressure without the rulebook. A deadline nobody negotiated, a competitor, a crisis, an illness, a boss whose standards change with mood. It arrives from outside the agreed structure and it demands a response now. The tradition is blunt about the two outcomes: a Day Master with support meets Seven Killings and is sharpened by it, and a Day Master without support is crushed. The same star makes a general in one chart and a casualty in another, and the difference sits entirely in what surrounds the Day Master.
Support, in this sense, means the Day Master's own element in other stems or branches, Resource stems that feed it, a favourable season, and roots in the hidden stems.
Two Gyeong Metal days, thirteen months apart
Hour unknown, so three pillars each. Kairo's engine leaves the Hour Pillar out in that case rather than guessing.
A birth in Seoul on June 25, 2026. The year is Byeong-O 丙午. The month is the O 午 month, between Mangjong (망종, 芒種) on June 6 and Soseo (소서, 小暑) on July 7, and in a Byeong year it carries Gap: Gap-O 甲午. The day is Gyeong-O 庚午.
A birth in Seoul on July 30, 2027. The year is Jeong-Mi 丁未. The month is the Mi 未 month, and in a Jeong year it carries Jeong: Jeong-Mi 丁未. The day is Gyeong-Sul 庚戌.

The polarity check first. Gyeong is Yang Metal. Byeong is Yang Fire, same polarity, so Byeong is Pyeongwan. Jeong is Yin Fire, opposite polarity, so Jeong is Jeonggwan.
The 2026 chart is a Gyeong Metal Day Master in the hottest month of the year, standing on three Horse branches, with Gap Wood in the month stem feeding the Fire. Gap is Indirect Wealth for Gyeong, and Wood produces Fire, so the Wealth is feeding the Seven Killings. No Earth stem, no second Metal. Practitioners read this as pressure with nothing behind the Day Master to absorb it.
The 2027 chart has the same Day Master, also under Fire, but the Fire is Jeong and it appears twice, and all three branches are Earth. Earth is Resource for Metal, the element that produces it. Mi 未 holds Gi 己 as its main hidden stem, and Sul 戌 holds Sin 辛 Metal among its hidden stems, which gives Gyeong a root of its own. Same element pressing on the same Day Master, but here the pressure is Direct Officer and the Day Master has ground under it.
Kairo reads the first as the crushing configuration to test and the second as the organising one. Each is a hypothesis about pressure, and only the person's own record over years can confirm or discard it.
How practitioners have handled Seven Killings
The classical texts treat heavy Pyeongwan as a structural problem with two named solutions, and knowing them explains how readers talk.
The first is 식신제살 (siksin jesal), "Eating God controls the Killings." Output is the element the Day Master produces, and in the cycle Output controls Power. For Gyeong Metal, Output is Water, and Water controls Fire. A chart with a strong Siksin next to a heavy Seven Killings is read as pressure held off by the person's own work, which is where the image of the craftsman who outlasts the tyrant comes from.
The second is 살인상생 (sal-in sangsaeng), "Killings and Resource producing each other." Power produces Resource, and Resource produces the Day Master, so a Resource stem between the two turns the attack into a supply line. Pressure becomes learning. The 2027 chart above is a Jeonggwan version of that shape, with Earth carrying Fire's force into Metal rather than letting it strike directly.
These are how practitioners read a chart. They are descriptions of structure, and Kairo does not offer them as advice about what anyone should do.
Where Power sits in the cycle
Power produces Resource. That arrow is the whole reason a controlling element is read as useful at all: a demand met becomes a skill, and a difficult year becomes the year you learned the thing you now teach.
Wealth produces Power. The article on the Wealth Stars sets this out from the other side. A chart in which Wealth feeds Power, as the June 2026 example does through Gap Wood into Fire, is one in which every resource gained arrives with an obligation attached, and the Day Master's strength decides whether that obligation is structure or weight.
Deadline or supervisor
Under a hard external deadline with no manager watching, do you produce your best work or your most careless work?
Under close supervision with generous time, does the quality rise or does the work stall?
Which rules have you kept for more than five years because they organise you, and which ones do you keep only because breaking them would be noticed?
When a crisis has arrived, from a competitor, a client, a lawsuit or a health scare, what did you do in the first 48 hours, and was it different from what you do under ordinary pressure?
Answers that differ sharply between the deadline case and the supervision case are the pattern this family describes.
What this can and cannot tell you
A chart cannot see your employer, your legal system, your manager's competence or whether the pressure you are under this year is fair. It cannot tell a court case from a marathon. Saju is an interpretive tradition, not a validated predictive method, and Kairo doesn't present it as one. No configuration on this page, including the June 25, 2026 chart, is a statement about what happens to anyone born on that day.
